In the EFL Championship, 24 teams compete in a double round-robin format with home and away matches. Three points are awarded for a win and one point for a draw. At the end of each season, the top two teams in the final table earn direct promotion to the Premier League. In addition, a third promoted team is determined via two play-off rounds among the teams finishing between third and sixth position.
In the play-offs, the third-placed team plays against the sixth-placed, and the fourth-placed plays against the fifth-placed in two-legged ties, with the lower-ranked team hosting the first leg. The away goals rule does not apply. The two winners then face each other in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium to contest the third promotion spot.
The three promoted teams are replaced by the three relegated teams from the Premier League that finished in the bottom three positions of their table. Similarly, the bottom three teams in the EFL Championship are relegated to the third tier, EFL League One, and replaced by three promoted teams from that league following the same principle. League standings are determined by points, goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head records among tied teams, and play-off match(es).
